Welcome back, Jeremy!

July 22, 2010

Dear Canaan EM sisters and brothers!

Jeremy is back!

Oh, you thought I was talking about the Jeremy Lin who:
–  led Palo Alto High to a victory over powerhouse Mater Dei for the state basketball championship in 2006
– was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award (for the nation’s top college point guard) as a senior at Harvard University
– averaged 16.4 points and 4.6 assists per game for the Crimson
– did so well as an undrafted player for the Dallas Mavericks during the NBA summer league in Las Vegas
– just signed a two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors (
– is a Christian and grew up in a Chinese church in the South Bay

Nope, I wasn’t talking about the one who was interviewed on KNBR yesterday (, has his own fan website (, and is about to be the second Asian American NBA player in history.

No, no – I meant Jeremy Lee, our Youth Director who was in Taiwan for almost a month, who helped lead a Short Term Mission team at Young Life camp (click the Missions tab), who is just about over his jet-lag, and is ready to lead our youth again! Welcome home. Jeremy!

I’m sure he and the Short Term Mission will have a lot to share at the English fellowship hour at 11 AM on August 15th (so y’all come, ya’ hear!). Believe me, even though I’ve only been serving at this church for four months, and even though I love working with all our staff, without Jeremy’s presence these past few weeks, it felt to me like something was missing.

From the return of the Prodigal Son to Jeremy Lin’s signing with the Warriors, home coming is almost a sacred event. It represents the restoration of relationships and healing in a community. Home coming is a foretaste of that great day when Christ shall return and establish justice, mercy, and peace on earth. So in this sense, it is all about hope and promise.

May Canaan also be about hope and promise to you…

  • If you have been away, you will always be welcomed back because we want forgiveness and reconciliation.
  • If you come regularly, but feel disconnected, don’t hesitate to let me or our other leaders know how you feel. We want to reconnect and build up a loving and supportive community.
  • If you have been working to the bones to sustain our common ministry, just hang in there a little longer! Hope and help is on the way. New co-workers are stepping up. We are starting up new leadership equipping opportunities this fall.
  • If you feel like you are not growing spiritually during your life stage transition, come to our retreat (Sept. 10-12). Our theme is all about renewal in life’s gaps. Click the Retreat tab and check out the new, less expensive, tent/RV option!
  • If you miss our Wednesday prayer meetings, don’t worry. Because prayer is so vital for spiritual growth, we must reboot this ministry well. Come to English worship this Sunday because I’ll share about “Prayer in God’s Abundance (Luke 11:1-13) and discuss how we can renew our prayer life.

Celebrate home coming at Canaan! May we be hope and promise to you!
