Feb 23, 2011

Dear Canaan EMers,

Betty and I have been members of several churches and have done our share of church shopping. We’ve assessed the pastor’s messages, the praise band, the children and youth ministries, the church’s friendliness, etc. Church shopping is inevitable in a society where religious freedom is valued highly. Consequently, churches are tempted to out perform each other to win new members. Sometimes an inordinate amount of pressure is placed on church members to look attractive and cool, perform impeccably, and design exciting programs. In our religious marketplace, customer satisfaction often outweighs the gospel of grace and Jesus’ call to discipleship, unfortunately.

Isn’t it great that God doesn’t choose us the same way we choose churches? Jesus doesn’t invite us into his Kingdom because we are in the top 4% in our class, look like super models, have a superior knowledge of the bible, or have been church-goers for more than ten years. He calls us as we are first. Only then does he transforms us toward spiritual maturity.

In other words, Jesus doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.

In the next few weeks, I want to share my personal vision for Canaan’s English ministry. I’ll share what I believe ought to be the characteristics of our faith community. I’m not suggesting that only people who exhibit these characteristics are qualified to participate in our community. Rather, I want everyone to help shape and embrace a new vision of what our church can look like.

So here are three ideas:
– At Canaan, we want to exhibit thoughtful passion in our worship and passionate thinking in our discipleship.
– At Canaan, we want to live out our faith as responsible radicals who are radically responsive.
– At Canaan, we are missional families with a mission to families.

Okay, okay, make fun of it, tear it apart. As long as we begin to talk about what makes Canaan so special. I’ll say more about each concept in the next few weeks.

1. Sunday REFRESH! (9:45 AM) will meet in the Main Lobby this Sunday so that the Children’s Choir can rehearse in Room 102. REFRESH! is an opportunity for co-workers to pray, share, and be equipped to lead.

2. First Annual Canaan Awards Night (Friday, Mar 11, 7-10 PM): Nearly 50 have signed up! We want more to come and enjoy a night to celebrate God’s goodness to us. Invite your friends. Let’s try to raise the roof with more than 100 people!

3. Have Breakfast with James Chuck on three Saturday mornings (Mar 12, 26, Apr 2)! This will be an informal and informative time to get a deeper overview of the Old Testament, New Testament, and Christian Theology. Because Canaan is a member church of ISAAC, we can all attend for free! Register with me. Go to for more information.

4. Beyond Tiger Parenting with Helen Lee (Sat. Mar. 19th, 9 AM – Noon). A workshop for moms and dads. Learn how to be a missional parent! Child care is provided. Because Canaan is a member church of ISAAC, we can all attend for free! And you only have to pay $7 for the book, The Missional Mom. Come and ask Helen to sign your copy! Register with me. Go to for more information.

5. Easter Season (the seven weeks between Easter Sunday and Pentecost) is a time to prepare for missions and evangelism. The EM Mission committee will offer evangelism training in preparation for summer missions, VBS, and other outreach activities. Please set aside Sunday afternoons for these equipping opportunities. More information forthcoming.
